It is a weld elimination.  The drill rifles experienced the barrel chambers welded shut along with the barrels welded to your receivers.  All they have to do is cut the weld Therefore the barrels could be taken off and replaced. Then in all probability touch up the threads, and take away any excessive weld on the outside.I dont have clear reason
